In today’s Vista Tip and Trick I want to show you a new Windows feature which is new with the coming of Vista. This speed up trick is called Windows Ready Boost and works pretty simple but before I begin the actual (few) steps, I’ll explain in short what it is.

Adding system memory (RAM) is often the best way to improve a PC’s performance. However, upgrading memory can be difficult and costly, and some systems have limited memory expansion capabilities, making it impossible to add RAM.

Windows Vista provides a new way to add memory to your system which is called Ready Boost. Now you can use a USB flash drive, to improve performance without having to add additional memory to your system.

The flash memory device serves as an additional memory cache, which means that your computer can access the necessary data much quicker than it can access data on the hard drive.

This is how you Speed Up Vista with Vista Ready Boost.

Its best is to use a USB flash drive that you can spare and then plug it in an empty USB slot, preferably at the backside of your system so that you won’t have it in sight.

Now you should see a pop-up with the option “Speed up my system, using Windows Ready Boost”.

If you are not prompted don’t panic;), just follow these steps.

  • GoTo start
  • Select My Computer
  • Right click your flash drive
  • Choose Properties
  • And select the ReadyBoost tab

Now check “Use this device” and tweak the settings, click apply and you’re done.

The minimum requirement for the USB is at least 256mb but I prefer to use a 1GB flash drive just to be sure.

If you have a spare USB and a spare USB2.0 slot it’s absolutely a good tweak to use. It works great (and fast).

I hope you’ve enjoyed this Vista Speed Up Trick. I’ll talk to you all tomorrow!!

That’s great! A memory upgrade I can afford. Man I wish I were more of a Windows expert.

I don’t spend much time promoting these tweaks, etc., but this one I’ll have to spread around.
    Thanks.

I didn’t notice much difference, but it seemed to go a tad faster, I stuck a 4GB chip in my Laptops SD slot, and amount at 1770MB, which is as much as the computer let me put in…
