If you want to clean up your system tray there are several ways to do this. The simple and easy way to do this is to right click on the system tray and disable or hide them temporary. Ill explain all these options in the next few weeks, stay tuned;).
If you would like to disable them permanently and don’t show any system tray icons at all you’ll need to change some things in the Windows Registry.

To permanently disable the icons in your system tray you’ll need to follow the next steps.
-
Go to start
-
And type in the Windows Vista Search box regedit and press enter.

If you haven’t disabled your User Account Control – UAC, you’ll see a pop-up asking you for permission.
-
Now you have your registry editor opened and you should find the key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

-
Now right click in the window on the right.
-
Click on new DWORD (32-bit) Value.
-
Name the new Key NoTrayItemsDisplay

-
Now double click on the key and assign a value of 1 to the key.

-
And you’re done, if you now reboot your system your system tray should be Icon free.
I hope you all liked this Vista Tip & Trick, ill talk to you all tomorrow.

my problem is that i cannot use the ‘hide inactive options’ because it is disabled . . .
i’m on a corporate laptop, and their windows xp image that was installed has that option disabled . . . i know there’s a registry key or somesuch that does it, but i am unable to locate it, and i’m sure every time i reboot it will probably be reset, but if i can find the key, i’m sure i can figure a way to export it and reset it after each reboot, i just have to get the crap out of the status bar that i don’t want to see ! ! !
where do they hide it ? ? ?
