Computer Tips, Tricks, Tweaks and Tutorials - Outlook Optimizing Tutorials nr.4: Create an Outlook toolbar button for opening a program.

And also in this week’s tutorial I’m sticking with some tips for your toolbar use. In the last couple of weeks we added and removed buttons from our toolbar, we’ve created a button for sending an e-mail with an already inserted receiver and we arranged the toolbar with the use of adding separators to it.

These 3 Outlook tutorials cover most of the things you’ll need for the toolbar, the only thing missing now is a tutorial for adding buttons to your toolbar that are opening programs and that is what I want to show you now.

Create an Outlook toolbar button for opening a program.

This is how my toolbar looks like now.

I already have one program button in my toolbar and that’s the One Note button. But there’s another program that I use quite often and that is the text editor notepad. This can be of course any program but for now I want to create a button that opens notepad.

First you’ll need to add a button to your toolbar, so we’ll need to put your toolbar in edit mode.

·         Right click on an empty spot on your toolbar.

·         And select Customize

Now drag a button from the Customize Window to your toolbar. I picked the Choose Form Button for two reasons. I don’t need this button and it kind of looks like text document. I’ll show you how to design your own button in another tutorial; I’ll publish this tutorial somewhere in the coming weeks. Stick around;).

·         Then Click on Modify Selection

·         And choose Assign Hyperlink and Open

The normal path for notepad is this.

C:\Windows\System32\notepad.exe

Then click Close and OK and you’re done. This notepad button is only an example, you can link to any program file in your Program Files directory but you also link to shortcuts or programs on your desktop. Just play around with it and set it to your own preferences.

I hope you’ve liked this tutorial and I’ll talk to you all tomorrow. Bye bye.
