The next Office Tip and Trick is for MS Outlook. It’s a small but handy tip for displaying your mailbox items in the way that you prefer. Microsoft Outlook has two options for displaying them. In blue "()" and in green "[]".
The Blue parenthesis "()" are for displaying the number of unread messages.
And the green brackets "[]" are for displaying the total number of messages in your inbox.
On this first picture you see a small portion of my personal folders. As you can see I have one draft e-mail that I need to finish and send out and I have for one of my e-mail accounts one new e-mail that I didn’t read yet. These are my standard settings.
If you want to change the display value for your Outlook mail folders you’ll need to:
-
Select the mail folder.
-
Right Click
-
Select properties
-
And now the general tab should be opened.
-
Now select which value you want to have displayed: “show number of unread items” or “show total number of items”.

-
And click on apply and OK
And you are done.
Once you’ve changed it could look like this but it depends what your preferences are. I prefer my mailboxes like the first picture but I can image that you do it in another way. If you have e-mails that you need to follow up and you don’t want to flag your items then it might be handy to have a folder named “follow up” where you place all the mails that you need to follow up.
