I know that some people use these buttons/icons everyday but today’s XP Tip & Trick isn’t useful for everyone. Today I want to show you how can make a desktop icon for a quick computer restart.
We used this method in the article where I showed you how to Create a XP Shutdown Button on Your Desktop.
This is how you make a desktop icon for a quick computer restart.
-
Right click on an empty space on your desktop.
-
Select new and shortcut.
-
Now type in the window shutdown -r -t 0 (the last character is a zero.)
![]()
Now you should have a desktop icon for a quick computer restart.
If you now want to change the icons you simple do the same as we did in the article Create a XP Shutdown Button on Your Desktop.
-
Right click on the icon.
-
Select properties
-
And click on change icon.
-
You might see a warning message that shutdown.exe contains no icons
-
Click OK
-
And choose a new icon.
Now you have a customized shortcut desktop icon for a quick computer restart.

I had no idea there where so many tweaks and tricks out there for Windows XP, and Vista as far as that goes. I don’t find all of them useful, but I’m sure I wont mind having a quick restart shortcut. Can’t wait to see what else you have for me. Thanks.
Regarding the first question. You get an error message saying “can’t find the file”, are you sure that the last caracter is a 0 zero? And what happens if you try one of the following commands:
Enter shutdown -s -t 0
Logoff: shutdown -l -t 0
And in regard to your second question: you are loosing the icon when you drag it to your toolbar.
This is strange, normally when you click on a “url icon/favicon” and you hold your mouse, it should disappear but then when you hoover the mouse over your quickstart menu there should appear a black or blue thin line where you can let go you mouse and drop the icon. To be honest, I don’t know what this could be; which browser are you using?
