This blog is mainly about Tips & Tricks for your office suite. Well okay that’s true but… you can have your office suite pimped and fine-tuned in the best possible way but if you don’t have a clean system your pimping and fine-tuning is all worthless.
What are we going to do at the World of Office? We are going to make a wide-ranging series about Cleaning your System, this way you’ll get the most out of your system capabilities and your office programs.
Learn the basics before you clean up your operating system.
Before we start this series I would like to talk to you about some imported things. You really need to know the basics about cleaning up your computer because it’s really easy to mess things up.
What to do when you are cleaning your system.
Doing a system clean it involves moving things around, adding, changing or renaming things and of course deleting things. Each of these things can have serious consequences for your operating system. Follow the next mentioned tips and safety measures and you’ll be out of the danger zone.
The first Tip is an essential one! Use notepad or a pen and paper to write down what you are doing or renaming.
This can be very helpful if your problems get worse, this way you can track back your steps.
If you don’t know what the Window Registry is for, don’t touch it!!
Always make a back-up before deleting a data key from your registry. Deleting the wrong key can be your worst nightmare. Please note that when you delete a key it doesn’t end up in the bin. It will be permanently deleted.
Be careful with the way you delete programs.
Never use the delete button on your keyboard! When you install a program the files are placed all over your computer and when you use it, the program will place tiny bits of information all spread out over your harddisk’s. When you delete a program always use the uninstaller that came with the software or use the add/remove programs menu in your systems control panel.
If you see new files or icons on your desktop, don’t click on them!
Same goes for deleting files you don’t know. Google it and see what it is for and delete the software via your add/remove applet in your control panel.
Keep your backups and original software disks close by.
Don’t be “smart” and keep your backups on the same system that you are cleaning up. Cleaning up you system can have serious consequences and you might not be able to open your backup folder. Always burn your back-ups on cd-roms that you can always access, this is also handy for future restoring.
Don’t delete files without knowing what they are and where they are for.
I have two tips for this; one, Google it! and see where the file is used for. And second, move the file to a different folder or rename it and restart your system and start up several programs and see if they are all running smoothly. Even if the programs are running fine I would still keep it on your system just to be sure.
Be consequent in backing up your files!
You have probably heard this before but for most people it is still quite an uncommon thing too do.
