New to the World of Office, XP and Vista Tips & Tricks?

Here are a few posts the other readers recommend you check out.

In the last couple of months we’ve covered some really cool Excel Tips and Tricks. But more important some of these Excel Tips and Tricks were really useful and will save you lots of time. Some of my personal favorite Excel Tips and Tricks are the Excel formula’s that we used to count all the empty cells, the one to automatically highlight the weekdays, and the Trick for Excel telling you your input so you can check your data. You can imagine that I would publish the Tips and Tricks first that I’m using most often. This is why I was a bit surprised when Danielle send me an e-mail if I could make a tutorial for her with a small explanation about the use of auto-form’s in Microsoft Excel. I’m using the drop down menus in Microsoft Excel quite often and they are real handy, they will save you lots of time so it was quite surprising that I didn’t cover it earlier but if you ask me; better late than never;).

I wrote yesterday about a formula to automatically display the weekends in a column. Pretty soon after I published the article I received an e-mail with a very good question from a guy from my birth city Rotterdam named Michel. So what else could I have done than to fit this reader question right in;).

Michel asked me this; this is a very good tip but now you’ve entered the weekends in a second column, what if I don’t want to add a second column because that is where my data is filled in. Is there a way to display the weekends in another way?

Yes, there is; it’s possible to change the fonts, the background colour or have the dates underlined or bolded.

Today I would like to talk about a Microsoft Word Tip and Trick. This question was send to me this weekend by Renate. She has a problem with the Hyperlinks in Microsoft Word. I also needed it once and I was desperate for a solution that I then couldn’t find. It can happen that you open MS Word and that your hyperlinks are shown like below with a code. This showing the code is often triggered by use of a quick key or combination or several keys.

If you’re Word documents are shown with hyperlink codes than this is a really great Word Tip that can solve a lot of frustration.

This is how your hyperlinks are shown.

I’ve received an e-mail from Anne asking if I could help out with a problem that she has at work. She gets a list on her desk quite frequently with on column full of data with 10 numbers (9+1). She needs to strip this data so that she only has the last 7 digits left.

@Anne, I hope I have this right. Just to be sure I’m also showing the way to keep the left 3 digits. It works practically the same. If I didn’t understand your mail right please let me know, okay?

For this Excel Tip or Trick were using the LEFT and RIGHT function to separate a row full of data from a determent amount of digits.

This weekend I received a mail from Michel, he asked me how I organized my e-mail and RSS feeds. He is working on two computers without an exchange server. I don’t know if I’m still in time because we intend to post the readers question within the same day.

Receiving RSS in Outlook with the ability to send mail but with-out receiving mail.

I’ve told you in the What is your Cleaning Schedule? post that I’m always working on two computers. One of the reasons for that is that I love being up-to-date with many many feeds. I have Microsoft Office installed on both machines and I use the lighter computer for my feeds.  I’m subscribed to about 100 feeds of which I follow 15 each day. As you can understand my computer is pretty busy every time he’s checking for new feeds. This was pretty annoying and for this I set up my second system for my feeds with the ability to send e-mails but without automatically receiving mails.

Okay, the next reader question comes from Jennifer.

I used to work with Microsoft Word 2003 and since recently I’m working with MS Word 2007. I really like working with Word 2007, I use it a lot. The only problem I have with Word 2007 is that I don’t have the formatting marks to work with. Do you know if Word 2007 still has this option or did MS delete it from 2007?

That’s a good question. Microsoft didn’t leave it out, it’s still possible to use the formatting marks, it’s only disabled by default.

To activate the formatting marks you need to follow the next steps.
