The Windows Operating Systems keep surprising me (in good and bad ways;)). Today I was preparing another XP Tip and Trick and I found this. I didn’t know this but not only Windows Vista has free partition software but also Windows XP although it is limited.

This is how to use your own Windows XP inbuilt free partition software.

  • Go to Start
  • Click on all programs
  • Open run
  • Type in “compmgmt.msc” (without the “”) and click on OK or press enter.

  • Click on Storage – Disk Management and you’ll see your hard disks.

  • Right click on the hard disks that you want to manage and you’ll see several options that you can use.

Now, this is something everyone should know long time ago. This is no rocket science, and is not tip or trick. This is well known feature that’s described in any Windows XP book.

You are absolutely right; this isn’t rocket science but it is for sure a good Tip. At the moment it is in the top 10 of the most viewed posts in Windows XP and its climbing.

Not all of us have read books about XP;) and I did but I didn’t knew/remembered this.

but this utility can not donating the space from one partition to the other such as partition magic

    You’re right Hendra,

The XP partition manager is indeed limited. Partition magic and the Free Vista Partition Manager have without a doubt more options. The XP partition manager is great when you have a new install. If you only need to do some basic stuff with it then this manager works excellent and then why pay for Partition Magic?

I google partition manager find some freeware bellow:

    paragon http://www.paragon-software.com
    I have not used,no comment!

    easeus partition manager
    I download from brother soft
    http://www.brothersoft.com/easeus-partition-manager-51814.html

It worked OK, but failed when i tried to merge partition. so i have to allocated the free space to another partition. Partition magic may merge two partitions which will cost you $69.95

I’ve just done a brand new Install of XP home SP3 and this partitioning ability option doesn’t exist - only ‘Open’, ‘Explore’, ‘Change Drive Letter and Paths…’, ‘Properties’, ‘Help’ are available with ‘Mark Partition As Active’, ‘Format’, ‘Delete Partition’ grayed out.
